The traded forms of Cameroonian timber — logs, sawn timber, boules, veneer, plywood and finished components.

Most first-time buyers arrive at this trade with a species in mind. That is usually the second question. The first is what form you are buying, because the form decides the price per cubic metre, how much work still has to be done after the container is opened, who carries the risk of that work going wrong, and — often — which suppliers can serve you at all.

A sawmiller, a plywood plant, a flooring importer and a furniture workshop can all be buying the same species from the same forest and be buying four completely different products, at four very different prices, with four different sets of things that can go wrong. This page walks the forms this platform actually lists, in roughly the order they sit along that chain, and says for each one what it is, who buys it, how it is normally specified, and what tends to go wrong.

Two things this page deliberately does not do. It gives no dimensions, thicknesses, standard sizes, moisture targets, yields, prices or conversion factors — every one of those is set per supplier, per species and per contract, and a number invented here would be worse than no number at all. And it does not cover the transaction or the shipment: the Buyer Academy covers specification, qualification, Incoterms, payment and inspection, and the Export Academy covers documents, customs and getting the goods onto a vessel.

The trade-off that runs through everything

There is one economic spine underneath all sixteen forms below.

The closer to raw you buy, the less you pay per cubic metre — and the more of the cost, the work and the risk you take on yourself. A log is the cheapest way to buy a given volume of a given species, and it is also the form in which you have bought unknown internal quality, will pay to convert it, and will convert a substantial part of it into sawdust and offcuts. A machined moulding is the most expensive way to buy the same wood, and it arrives ready to install.

Everything in between is a position on that line. Which position is right for you is not a question about the timber; it is a question about what your own operation can do. If you own a sawmill and kilns, buying processed material is paying someone else for capacity you already have. If you do not, buying raw material is buying a problem you are not equipped to solve — and the savings evaporate the first time a parcel dries badly.

Three things move with that line and are worth naming:

  • Where quality is determined. In raw forms, most of the quality is inside the wood and will only be revealed when you cut it. In processed forms, most of the quality has already been decided by someone else, and your job is verifying it rather than creating it.
  • Where drying risk sits. Movement, distortion and checking happen as timber loses moisture. If it arrives green, that event is going to happen in your yard. See the Processing Academy for how drying is actually done, and the glossary for what air dried and kiln dried mean as specification terms.
  • How much of what you paid for you can use. Volume bought and volume used are the same number only for finished components. For everything else there is a conversion loss, it varies by species, form and what you are making, and nobody can tell you what yours will be from a distance.

Before the sections: what "available" means here

Availability by form is genuinely supplier-specific and species-specific. A mill with a moulder can machine profiles; one without cannot, whatever the species. A species that dries slowly is a poor candidate for a form that must arrive at a tight moisture content. A supplier who exports logs may not saw at all.

So treat every section below as describing a form that exists in this trade and is listed on this platform — not as a promise that a given species is obtainable in that form from a given supplier this month. That is a question to put in an enquiry, alongside your specification, and the answer is part of how you qualify the supplier. You can post an RFQ with the form and species stated and let several suppliers answer it at once, or browse the supplier directory to see who lists which specialisation.

Where a species is named below, it is named because the platform's own species directory records that use for it. That is evidence the association is real; it is not evidence any particular supplier has it in stock.


Logs

Round logs are the unconverted form: the stem cut to export length, with bark on or off, graded at the log yard on what is visible from the ends and the surface.

Who buys them. Buyers with conversion capacity of their own — sawmills, veneer mills, plywood plants — and traders serving them. Buying logs makes sense when you want to control the sawing pattern yourself, when you want the widest possible boards a stem can yield, or when your product needs the whole log (rotary-peeled veneer being the clearest case).

How it is specified. Species, diameter and length parameters, and a log grade. Log grading is its own discipline and is not the same thing as lumber grading — see the Quality & Grading Academy — but in practice it turns on straightness, taper, soundness of the ends, and visible defects.

What goes wrong. You are buying the outside of an object whose value is inside it. Internal defect — heart shake, rot, brittleheart, ingrown bark, insect galleries, and in some species mineral inclusions that damage saw teeth — is invisible until the first cut, and it is your loss once the log is yours. Logs also degrade fast in a tropical climate once felled: end-splitting, staining and insect attack all start early, which makes the elapsed time between felling and loading a fair question to ask.

Export position. Whether a given species may leave Cameroon in log form, and under what conditions, is a regulatory matter that has changed over time and continues to change. We do not state the current position anywhere on this site. Confirm it with MINFOF and your own clearing agent before you contract, and read the Compliance Academy for the destination-market side.

Boules / Through-and-through

A boule is a single log sawn straight through into boards of the same thickness and then restacked in the order it was cut, so the log can be read back board by board. The glossary entry defines the term.

Who buys them. Furniture makers, high-end joiners and anyone who needs grain and colour to match across a piece or a project. A boule is the only sawn form that guarantees the boards next to each other in your workshop were next to each other in the tree.

How it is specified. Species, the thickness the log was sawn to, and whether the boule is complete and its sequence intact. Because the boards are the widths the log gave, widths and lengths are inherently variable — that is the nature of the product, not a defect in it.

What goes wrong. Boules get broken up. A boule that has been picked over, or restacked out of sequence, has lost the exact property you paid a premium for and is now just a mixed parcel of boards. Ask explicitly whether boules are supplied whole and sequence-marked. The outer boards also carry more sapwood and more waney edge than the middle, which is normal and should be expected in the yield you plan for.

Sawn timber

Sawn timber is the workhorse of the trade: timber cut to commercial sizes, dried, and sold by volume in CBM.

Who buys them. Almost everyone. Importers, distributors, joinery shops, furniture manufacturers and remanufacturers who want usable stock without owning a mill.

How it is specified. This is the form where a loose enquiry does the most damage, because "sawn timber" on its own describes almost nothing. A workable specification states species, thickness, width and length — and crucially whether widths and lengths are fixed, random, or random within a stated range — the grade and the grading rule it is written under, the drying state and target moisture content, and the volume with a tolerance. Random-width random-length material is completely normal in this trade and perfectly usable; it simply prices and yields differently from a fixed cutting list, and a buyer expecting one and receiving the other has a dispute rather than a delivery.

What goes wrong. Two things, repeatedly. Moisture content, because it is the specification line most often omitted and is effectively unfixable after arrival — timber that arrives wetter than your workshop will move as it equilibrates, and by then it is in your product. And grade drift, because grade names are not universal and "first grade" means whatever the person saying it wants it to mean; name the rule, not the letter. Both are worth wiring into a pre-shipment inspection, which the Buyer Academy covers.

Planks

Planks are wide sawn boards of moderate thickness, aimed at general joinery, furniture and shelving rather than at structural use.

Who buys them. Furniture and joinery workshops that want width without edge-jointing, and merchants supplying them.

How it is specified. As for sawn timber, with width being the point of the purchase: state your minimum acceptable width and whether you will accept a range, because width is the attribute you are paying for and the one most likely to be quietly substituted.

What goes wrong. Wide boards are the least stable geometry timber offers. Cupping and distortion scale with width, so drying quality matters more here than in narrower stock, and so does how the parcel was stacked and protected for a humid sea voyage. Species with visible colour variation between boards can also give a parcel that is technically to grade and visually mismatched — worth raising if the boards will be seen.

Squares / Scantlings

Squares and scantlings are square or rectangular sections and billets cut for turning, framing and remanufacture — material bought as input to another process rather than for use as it stands.

Who buys them. Turnery, tool-handle and component manufacturers, furniture part makers, and remanufacturers who want stock already reduced towards their finished section.

How it is specified. Section and length, drying state, and — more than in most forms — what defects are acceptable, since a small section leaves no room to cut around a knot or a shake. Buyers usually specify against the finished component rather than against a general grade.

What goes wrong. Yield. A defect that is a minor downgrade in a wide board can write off an entire billet, so a parcel that grades acceptably can still perform badly against your cutting requirement. If the end use is turnery, straightness of grain and freedom from internal stress matter as much as the surface grade. Species the catalogue records for turnery include Padouk and Niove.

Beams

Beams are large-section structural members for framing, roofing and heavy construction.

Who buys them. Construction contractors, heavy-timber builders, and importers serving structural markets.

How it is specified. Section, length, species, and — the part that matters most — the structural basis on which they are being sold. Structural use is a load-bearing application, and the relevant question is what strength grading or engineering assessment sits behind the material, under whose rules, and whether that is recognised where the beam will be installed. Appearance grading tells you nothing about strength.

What goes wrong. Large sections dry slowly and unevenly, and surface checking and end splitting in heavy stock are common and are often cosmetic — but distinguishing cosmetic checking from a defect that matters structurally is an engineering judgement, not a trading one. Weight is also a practical issue: dense tropical species in large sections load out heavy, which affects containerisation. A note on responsibility. Nothing on this site is an engineering specification. If a member is carrying load, the acceptance criteria must come from your engineer and the code that applies at the destination, and must be written into the contract before you order.

Live-edge slabs

Slabs are full-width cuts with the natural edge of the tree retained, sold for tabletops, counters and feature pieces.

Who buys them. Bespoke furniture makers, interior fit-out specialists, and retailers selling finished slab furniture.

How it is specified. Slabs are individuals, not a commodity, and are normally bought against photographs of the actual piece plus its measured length, width range and thickness. Specifying a slab in the abstract does not work; ask for images of the specific slab, of both faces, and of the ends.

What goes wrong. Drying, above all. Slabs are the thickest and widest form in this list, they take the longest to dry, and a slab that arrives insufficiently dry will cup, check or split after you have built it into something. Ask how it was dried, for how long, and how the moisture content was measured — not what it is claimed to be. Then ask about the pieces that will drive your yield: how much of the width is sapwood, how sound the natural edge is, and whether there are voids or bark inclusions that will need filling. Railway sleepers

Sleepers are heavy, dense sections cut for railway track, and — increasingly, in export markets — for landscaping, retaining walls and civil works.

Who buys them. Rail infrastructure contractors and their suppliers, and landscaping and civil-engineering distributors.

How it is specified. Section and length, species, and the technical standard the buyer is working to, which for track use is set by the railway authority and is not negotiable at the supplier's end. Durability class matters here more than appearance: sleepers sit in ground contact, wet, under load, for decades.

What goes wrong. Substitution of a less durable species, which is invisible on arrival and expensive a decade later, and material that does not meet a rail standard being offered as though it does. Species identity verification is worth real effort in this form. The catalogue records railway sleepers as a use for Azobé, Tali, Bilinga, Okan, Mukulungu, Dabema, Alep and Eveuss — the naturally very durable, very dense end of the Cameroonian catalogue.

Poles and posts

Poles and posts are round or lightly dressed sections for fencing, utility lines, piling and construction support.

This is a form the platform lists and a real category of trade, but it is one where we have little we can say that is both specific and verified. What is stable and worth stating: poles for ground contact or utility use are normally bought against a durability requirement and, very often, a preservative treatment specification — which treatment, to what penetration and retention, evidenced how. Those parameters come from the standard the buyer's market applies, not from the supplier, and they should be in the contract. Treatment is covered in the Processing Academy.

We do not publish dimensions, treatment retentions or species recommendations for this form. Put the requirement in an enquiry and ask suppliers what they can evidence.

Decking

Decking is exterior-grade board machined to a profile — terraces, walkways, boardwalks, marine decking.

Who buys them. Decking distributors, landscape and marine contractors, and importers supplying the outdoor construction market.

How it is specified. Species and its natural durability, the profile (including whether one or both faces are usable and whether grooving is required), the fixing method the profile assumes, section and lengths, drying state, and an appearance grade that reflects an exterior product rather than a furniture one.

What goes wrong. Decking is bought for a service life measured in decades and judged on a photograph taken on day one, which is a bad combination. The attributes that matter most — natural durability, dimensional stability in wet-dry cycling, and how much movement to expect — belong to the species, so species identity is the thing to verify. Colour change under UV is normal and happens to all of them; buyers who were not told this treat it as a defect, so agree in advance whether the deck is expected to be maintained or to weather. The catalogue records decking or exterior use for Iroko, Azobé, Tali, Bilinga, Mukulungu and Assamela.

Flooring

Flooring is machined solid or engineered board, usually tongue-and-groove profiled, for interior floors.

Who buys them. Flooring importers, distributors and fit-out contractors.

How it is specified. Solid or engineered — and if engineered, the wear-layer and the core construction, which are different products with different tolerances. Then the profile, the board dimensions and whether lengths are fixed or random, the appearance grade (which for flooring is a description of how much colour variation, sapwood, knot and figure the parcel will show, not a quality verdict), the surface finish or lack of one, and the moisture content — which for flooring is the specification line that decides whether the floor is still flat in a year.

What goes wrong. Moisture content mismatched to the destination's indoor climate is the single dominant failure, and it produces gapping or cupping months after installation, when nobody wants to hear about it. The second is grade expectation: a "rustic" or character grade delivered to a buyer picturing a clean uniform floor is a technically correct shipment and a commercially failed one, so agree on sample boards or photographs of the actual grade before you order. The catalogue records flooring or parquet as a use for Padouk, Wenge, Moabi, Movingui, Doussié, Kotibé, Niove and Ebiara.

Mouldings

Mouldings are machined profiles — skirting, architrave, beading, window sections and similar.

Who buys them. Joinery distributors, window and door manufacturers, and fit-out suppliers who want profile work done at origin.

How it is specified. Against a drawing. A moulding order specified in words is an order waiting to go wrong; send the profile, with dimensions and tolerances, and confirm the supplier can hold it. Then specify whether pieces are solid or finger-jointed and laminated, whether they are primed or finished, lengths and packing, and moisture content.

What goes wrong. Machining quality — tear-out, fuzzy grain, inconsistent profile — which depends on the species as much as the machine, and which is only visible on the actual pieces. Ask for samples run on the actual profile in the actual species. Species the catalogue associates with mouldings and machined interior trim include Ayous, Abura, Longhi and Emien.

Veneer

Veneer is thin sheet peeled or sliced from a log, for panel facing and decorative overlay.

Who buys them. Panel manufacturers, plywood mills, furniture manufacturers and specialist veneer merchants.

How it is specified. First, how it was produced: rotary-peeled veneer comes off the log as a continuous sheet and is the volume product behind plywood; sliced veneer is cut in sequence and is the decorative product, sold in matched bundles where the sequence is the value. Then thickness, sheet dimensions, grade, and — for sliced material — whether bundles are kept in sequence, which is exactly the property boules have and for the same reason.

What goes wrong. Broken sequence in decorative bundles, and colour and figure mismatch between bundles that were quoted as one lot. Veneer is also fragile and moisture-sensitive in transit, so packing is not a detail. Buy decorative veneer against images of the actual bundles. The catalogue records decorative sliced veneer for species including Sapele, Bubinga, Zingana, Bossé and Aningré, and rotary veneer and plywood use for Okoumé, Ilomba, Frake and Ozigo.

Plywood

Plywood is a glued panel built from veneer layers, sold in commercial or marine grades.

Who buys them. Panel distributors, construction and marine buyers, furniture and packaging manufacturers.

How it is specified. Panel dimensions and thickness; the number of plies and the construction; the face and back veneer species and grade, which are often different from each other and from the core; the glue bond, which is the property that decides whether the panel survives moisture and is the difference between an interior panel and a marine one; and the standard the grade claim is made under. Marine plywood in particular is a claim against a specification, and the specification should be named.

What goes wrong. Core quality, because it is the part you cannot see: gaps, overlaps and voids in the inner plies show up when the panel is cut or loaded. Glue-bond claims that are not backed by a named standard are the other recurring problem, and the failure appears only after the panel gets wet. Ask for the standard, and ask what testing supports it. The catalogue records plywood and marine plywood use for Okoumé, and plywood or blockboard core use for Ayous, Ilomba, Fromager and Essessang.

Laminated and edge-glued panels

Laminated and edge-glued panels are solid-wood panels built by gluing strips or boards edge to edge, for worktops, stair treads, shelving and furniture.

Who buys them. Worktop and furniture manufacturers, and kitchen and joinery distributors who want width and stability without doing the glue-up themselves.

How it is specified. Panel dimensions and thickness; the construction — whether the strips run the full length or are finger-jointed, and how wide they are, since both are visible in the finished panel; the visual expectation for colour and grain matching across the strips; the adhesive and whether it is rated for the panel's intended exposure; the moisture content; and the surface condition as supplied.

What goes wrong. Glue-line failure and joint opening, both of which trace back to the same root cause: panels glued at a moisture content that does not match where they are going, or with an adhesive not suited to the exposure. The other issue is visual — strip-to-strip colour variation that is acceptable to the maker and unacceptable to the end customer. Agree the appearance standard against a physical sample, not a description.

Charcoal and biomass

Charcoal, briquettes and wood biomass are produced from timber residues and offcuts — a genuinely different trade from the ones above, with different buyers, different units and different quality parameters.

This is the form on which we currently have the least verified material, and we would rather say so than fill the gap. What is stable and safe to state: this is a bulk commodity bought on measured technical parameters — calorific value, ash, volatiles, fixed carbon, moisture, fines and sizing — established by laboratory analysis on a drawn sample, not by description. Buyers normally contract against a specification with those parameters and a stated tolerance, and tie payment to an analysis certificate. We publish no values for any of them.

Two things worth flagging even without more detail. Charcoal and biomass have their own transport and storage requirements, including handling rules that apply to the commodity in shipping, which your forwarder should confirm rather than assume. And the feedstock question — what the material was made from and where that wood came from — is a legality question exactly as much as it is for sawn timber; see the Compliance Academy.


Choosing between forms: the questions that actually decide it

  • What can you do in-house? Sawing, drying, machining. Every capability you have is a reason to buy one step further back; every one you lack is a reason to buy further forward.
  • What is your tolerance for variability? Random-width, random-length, variable-colour material is normal and cheaper and needs someone to sort and cut it. Fixed lists and finished components cost more and need nobody.
  • Where do you want the drying risk? If timber arrives green, the movement happens on your site. That can be fine — if you have the space, the time and the stacking discipline.
  • What does your end customer see? Structural and hidden uses can absorb visual variation. Anything visible turns appearance into a specification line that has to be agreed against samples or photographs.
  • What has to be evidenced? Structural claims, durability claims, glue-bond claims, treatment claims and grade claims all need to name a standard and a document. A claim with no standard behind it is a sentence, not a specification.

When you know the form, the species and the specification, post an RFQ so several suppliers quote against one written brief. The Products Academy currently has no articles published. This pillar page is all there is, and it is deliberately a map rather than a manual: it tells you what each traded form is, how it is specified and what fails, and it stops exactly where a real number would have to be invented. That is why you will find no dimensions, no standard sizes, no moisture targets, no yields, no conversion factors and no prices anywhere on this page or anywhere else on this site — the honest answer to every one of those is that it is set per species, per supplier and per contract, and the way to get it is to ask several suppliers the same written question.
